As the season shifts and the leaves begin to fall, Urban Forest - South Jakarta feels a little different. The air grows softer, the light turns golden, and under the trees of Urban Forest, a community gathers. For three magical days, The Local Market becomes more than a bazaar and it becomes a home for stories, traditions, and togetherness.
Here, artisans from across Indonesia bring with them the beauty of their craft: handmade goods that carry heritage, organic produce touched by the earth, upcycled treasures reborn with new purpose. Each piece is more than an object … it is a story waiting to be shared. And as the community wanders from stall to stall, they are not just shopping, but weaving themselves into these stories.
As evening draws near, warmth gathers on the lawn. Families sit side by side, children leaning against their grandparents, friends sharing laughter over food and tea. The night sky becomes a canvas, and into it blooms the age-old art of Wayang Kulit. Shadows move delicately across the screen, each flicker alive with legend and wisdom. The deep, resonant tones of the krawitan gamelan flow like a heartbeat, grounding us, reminding us of the rhythms that have carried through generations. And then the dancers step forward with their movements graceful, rooted, timeless as though the earth itself is speaking through them. In that moment, the past and present fold gently into each other, and we are reminded that these traditions are not just performances, but living bridges connecting us all.
And on Sunday, the magic deepens. Beneath the quiet shade of the trees, as the sun begins to soften and the day leans toward evening, Papermoon Puppet Theatre takes the stage. Their art is unlike any other, it is delicate, tender, and alive. With hands that move like whispers, they awaken puppets that carry not only stories but also emotions too deep for words.
Papermoon does not simply perform but they invite us to remember. To remember what it feels like to wonder, to dream, to believe in impossible things. Under the canopy of leaves, their story will become ours, and for one evening, we will all be children again … listening, watching, feeling. It will be a moment that lingers, long after the puppets rest and the night carries us home.
This fall, as the leaves drift gently to the ground, come sit with us under the canopy of trees. As artisan, as visitor, as friend, as family. Together, let us celebrate Indonesia and its stories, its traditions, and its future and its one heartwarming embrace.
